Obuda University has signed a memorandum of understanding with Axiom Space and joined the Axiom Space University Alliance, becoming its first member university from Central and Eastern Europe. The cooperation opens new opportunities for research, technology development, education and international collaboration in low-Earth orbit.

The memorandum was signed by Professor Levente Kovács, Rector of Obuda University, and Dr Lucie Low, Chief Science Officer of Axiom Space.
Launched in 2025, the Axiom Space University Alliance brings together academic and scientific institutions committed to advancing microgravity research, technology development and commercial innovation in low-Earth orbit. The network has grown to 36 institutions across 16 countries and four continents.

First steps discussed at IAC 2026
Representatives of the two parties met during the 77th International Astronautical Congress (IAC 2026) in Antalya to discuss the first steps in their collaboration.

Axiom Space was represented by Dr Lucie Low, Chief Science Officer, and Dr Pinar Mesci, Global Head of Biomanufacturing and Biotechnology. Obuda University was represented by Professor Miklós Kozlovszky, Director of the Obuda University Space Lab, and Dr Péter Kristóf, Rector’s Envoy for Space Affairs.

The discussions explored how the University’s research and educational capabilities could contribute to the Alliance and how the cooperation could strengthen Central and Eastern Europe’s participation in international space research.

Areas of future cooperation

The memorandum identifies several potential areas for collaboration:

  • microgravity research, experimentation and technology development, including payloads, advanced materials, human performance and in-space applications;
  • space systems and enabling technologies, including robotics, autonomous systems, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, Earth observation, sensors and instrumentation;
  • sustainable and commercial use of low-Earth orbit, including space sustainability, circular-economy approaches and new business models; and
  • education, talent development and international academic cooperation, particularly across Central and Eastern Europe and the transatlantic region.

The non-binding memorandum establishes a framework for exploring specific initiatives, which would be developed through separate agreements.

Strengthening international space cooperation

Joining the Alliance marks another important step in the development of Obuda University’s international space activities. Through the Obuda University Space Lab and its network of academic and industrial partners, the University is expanding its work in space engineering, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, Earth observation, robotics, sustainability and space-related education.

Participation in the Alliance will create new channels for connecting these capabilities with international research priorities and future commercial orbital platforms. The cooperation also builds on the growing relationship between Hungary and Axiom Space, including Hungary’s participation in the Ax-4 mission to the International Space Station.

By joining the Alliance, Obuda University aims not only to expand its own research and educational opportunities but also to support a stronger and more internationally connected space ecosystem across Central and Eastern Europe.
